China Introduces the World’s First National Mandatory MEPS for Photovoltaic Modules

In June 2026, China issued Minimum Allowable Values of Energy Efficiency and Energy efficiency grades (MEPS) for crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules and inverters (GB 47834-2026), which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. This standard is the first mandatory energy efficiency standard for PV modules globally and it may pave the way for regulating the energy performance of solar-related appliances in China. It is estimated that this policy will lead to a cumulative reduction of 306 million tons of CO₂ emissions by 2040.

This standard covers ground-mounted n-type PV modules and grid-connected inverters. It specifies the energy efficiency grades, minimum energy efficiency requirements based on photovoltaic conversion efficiency of PV modules and DC-AC conversion efficiency of inverters, and the test and calculation methods for PV modules and inverters.

CLASP provided technical assistance and shared international experience to support the development of this MEPS.
