China raises MEPS for dishwashers and smart toilets
In August 2025, China issued new minimum allowable values and grades for the energy and water efficiency of dishwashers (GB 38383-2025) and smart toilets (GB 38448-2025). Both standards will take effect on April 1, 2027.
The revised standard for dishwashers strengthens efficiency levels significantly: the baseline requirement rises by about 30%, while Tier 1 requirements increase by about 35%. The revised standard for smart toilets raises the minimum energy efficiency requirements by about 20%. Both standards also set requirements for water efficiency and standby power.
The revised standards for dishwashers and smart toilets are projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 14 Mt and 36 Mt, respectively, between 2027 and 2040.
CLASP contributed to this outcome by providing the EU’s standard practices on dishwashers and analysis of energy saving and emission reduction for both standards.
